Maritime Monday: A Scene From Our Fredericks’ Lives
Below is an engraving set in the time period of our Frederick family’s departure from Germany to America. Destination: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which, at the time, was the largest city in America. Looking at a globe or map, one can see why Philadelphia was the preferred port; it’s literally straight across the Atlantic Ocean from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. Since America was quickly being thrown into the War between England and France, with the two nations issuing proclamation acts of threats of taxation if America did not forswear the other, America did what she must. She closed her borders. More on that later.
